Wheels in Motion
Finished in November 2017, this landscape-based public art project is located in the quaint city of Rock Hill, South Carolina, around a new roundabout entrance to the upcoming community center, Knowledge Park.
Wheels in Motion at Knowledge Park Circle is a transformative public art piece that visually represents Rock Hill’s transformation from a predominantly textile industry into a city that utilizes and creates new technology. The design was inspired by imagery collected from 1900s Rock Hill textile and buggy industries, primarily circular forms such as fabric rolls and buggy wheels. The continuous loop in the design references time, which connects the past to the present and the present to the future. Colorful bands of plants circle the outer edge of the loop to create a living sculpture that changes seasonally as well as yearly, growing and transforming itself with the city. Within the layers of foliage, shrubs, and grasses lay ten concrete discs that emphasize unique qualities of Rock Hill’s culture and community.
Winthrop University featured the public art project in their Spring 2018 edition of Winthrop Magazine. It ran in both printed and online versions. You can view the online version by clicking here.
